URI Basketball Preview: Will the Ruckus be Brought?

PC: Alan Hubbard

The Runnin’ Rams open up their season tomorrow night against Long Island University Sharks and there are mixed feelings here in Kingston. The Rams, who were picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball preseason poll. They also had three All-Conference Team selections, Cyril Langevine (1st Team, All-Defensive Team), Jeff Dowtin (2nd Team), and Fatts Russell (3rd Team). The Rams are also going to need big performances from sophomores Dana Tate and Tyrese Martin.

Having one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, let alone the toughest mid-major conference in the country in the Atlantic 10. Rhody plays a possible of three preseason Top-25 teams in the country. They will play the #7 team in the country in the Maryland Terrapins. They’ll then play LSU and possibly Utah St, in addition to the Alabama Crimson Tide taking a trip up to Kingston. In their five games against power five conference teams, the Rams will need to go 3-2 in those games to put them into a good spot heading into A-10 play, those power five teams are also excluding a top-25 Utah St. team.

In A-10 play, the Rams were picked to finish fourth in the preseason conference poll. That prediction should hold true for the Rams as they have one of the best frontcourts in the country with Cyril Langevine, Jermaine Harris, and Antwan Walker who will be eligible to return after the conclusion of the first semester.

They also have some of the most experienced guard tandems in the A-10 as well with a combined three trips to the Big Dance between Jeff Dowtin and Fatts Russell. Tyrese Martin and Dana Tate should contribute at a bit of a guard/forward mix throughout the year as well.
