Just as you thought everyone was transferring out of the URI basketball program, now everyone is transferring in. Transferring is becoming rampant throughout all of college basketball. David Cox received commitments from three transfers today, including a set of twins from Maryland and the brother of a former Rams legend, Hassan Martin, coming from the University of Charlotte.
The two 6’9 forwards, Makhi and Makhel Mitchell left Maryland in December. This morning, the twins picked URI over the likes of Georgetown and PC.
Later this afternoon, Charlotte transfer Malik Martin, the younger brother of former Rams star Hassan Martin, announced he is also coming to Kingston. He made the announcement on his social media. The three transfers along with commit Abou Ousmane fill three roster spots for David Cox. Mitchell, Mitchell and Malik Martin make up half of what is now a six-man recruiting class for URI. The Rams also signed guards Ishmael Leggett and Elijah Wood in November.
The Rams have one open scholarship remaining. The Rams have to put their focus on a guard as they have now recruited three big men and a tall scorer. The Rams desperately need a strong shooting guard with the departure of Tyrese Martin this past week. The Rams have been recruiting Abou Ousmane’s prep teammate, scoring guard Tres Berry, graduate transfer DePaul guard Devin Gage, and son of Dwayne Wade, Zaire Wade.
