Does anyone else think the two games in the College Football Playoff were useless? So much build up and anticipation surrounded the playoff, only to have the two most obvious contenders advance to the final. Should we really have expected anything less than an Alabama versus Clemson national championship? With the more meaningless games out of the way, it’s now time to watch the two heavyweights of college football duke it.

After a successful first round of staff picks, here’s what the ASN team has to say.

Did you think the first round of games were uneventful and predictable? Well, you are in for quite the treat. While Clemson looked unstoppable against a Notre Dame team that did not come to play, they are not on the same level as Alabama. What concerns me the most is freshman quarterback Trevor Lawerence, and how well he can handle the pressure from one of the most athletic defenses in the country. During the game against Notre Dame, he was slow to get going with the amount of pressure put in his face. The rest is history, but Alabama is built well enough to feed on young players like Lawerence. I promise you will be watching the Bachelor after an hour of watching this game.

What do you know, the number 1 and 2 teams facing off in the National Championship game once again. Trevor Lawerence has been phenomenal for the Tigers this year and continued to show that in the Cotton Bowl against Notre Dame. Although Clemson has been great, I think this game will come down to the experience. Alabama has Tua Tagovailoa on their side, who knows exactly what it takes to win a National Championship. And not to mention Coach Nick Saban, if he wins this game he will have to most National Championships by a coach ever with a single team. The only thing Alabama has to worry about is their offensive line, if their O-line can maintain Clemson’s defensive line, it will be a cake walk for Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide.

Ah yes, the annual big game between Alabama and Clemson. This will be the fourth time the teams will meet in the CFP in as many years, and this one might be the most unpredictable one. Two of the best college football minds in Saban and Swinney face off again. I look to one thing, quarterback experience. Lawrence and Tagovailoa matchup on paper pretty well, but let’s not forget Tua’s big audition last year in the Championship game. Lawrence is a young quarterback with a lot of skill, and could very well be the number 1 overall draft pick in a few years. But right now, he is still a true freshman playing in the biggest game of his career. I would like to see a victory from Clemson, but head-to-head, Alabama has a slight edge.

Final Score: Alabama 34 Clemson 31

A true 19-year-old freshman phenom leads the dynamic Clemson offense down the field with 2 minutes left and scores the game-winning touchdown to secure the Tigers their second CFP Championship in two years against the Alabama Crimson Tide. While this sounds magical and exhilarating if you’re a Clemson fan, it simply isn’t going to happen. I have been watching Trevor Lawrence since his senior year in high school, and that man is the truth. He would debatably be the #1 overall pick in this year’s draft if he was allowed, but he is playing a college football gargantuan in Alabama. Over the years, Nick Saban’s team has historically had a smothering defense and a more than solid running game that has led this team to the promised land time after time. Now, you’re going to tell me they have arguably the most dynamic passing attack in the country? Forget about it. This team didn’t even need to have competent quarterbacks to win national championships before, and now they do. It’s almost like giving Usain Bolt a 50-meter head start in the 100-meter dash. This team can beat you any which way they desire, and Clemson sadly won’t be able to do anything about that. I think Trevor Lawrence has a solid day, but Alabama will simply be too much to handle for the Tigers.

Final Score: Alabama 42, Clemson 21

For the fourth straight year, we will be seeing an Alabama vs. Clemson playoff game. And for the third time, the winner will be crowned National Champion. As much as a lack of parity in sports can be a bore, these are the two most deserving teams, and I think this will be an exciting game. Alabama and Clemson are very similar teams: great young quarterbacks, anchored by star-studded defensive lines, and led by probably the two best coaches in college football. This game will be closed for a while, but I believe Saban will come up with a scheme to take advantage of Trevor Lawrence’s youth. Even Deshaun Watson couldn’t conquer the powerhouse that is Alabama until his senior year. Now equipped with a Heisman trophy winner at QB, who has one national championship under his belt already, the Tide will repeat on tonight.
